Children's literature is not for the weak. It is a ruthless cutthroat business with lots of gnashes of the teeth. Children's librarianship, in contrast, is a sweet sweet ride. Now you can hear me as I growl, gargle, and kvetch my way through news, reviews, and interviews. Kidlit podcasting = scary new world.

Fantasy For the Fearful
Perhaps, like myself, you have grown so attached to children's books that you were unaware that Susanna Clarke had written yet another. Perhaps, like myself, you fear that it may not live up to its predecessor, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. And perhaps only a reassuring review by fantasy master Ursula LeGuin will soothe your worried soul. If so, look no further than here.
Oooh, thanks for posting this! I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, so I'm glad to know about this.
ReplyDeleteActually, the review is sort of mixed...
ReplyDeleteI loved STRANGE, but -- yikes -- I am not reassured. The review ends with the words "Who cares?"
ReplyDeleteDid I say reassured? I meant perturbed. Such similar words.
ReplyDeleteThe headline "Fairy tales for cynics" gets points from me.
ReplyDeleteI thought JS&MN was okay but not stellar due to the fact that I predicted the ending quite early on.
When I first saw a commercial for that new Christian Bale flick, The Prestige, I wondered if it was JS&MN until a few seconds later, when they revealed more of the plot.
