The Lisa Yee Lookalike Contest Continues

You know how you won't spot a trend for a while and then before you know it it's everywhere? I mentioned recently that a book presented at the Random House preview had some book jacket similarities to Lisa Yee's titles. Compare and contrast for yourself.

There was this:

As opposed to these:

Brendan Buckley does so well because not only do we have half a child's face staring upwards, but the title itself contains the main character's first and last name. So when bookshelves of doom presented a new entry, I was thrilled. Shown here:
Ideally Storky's last name would be in the title and he'd be looking up, but I think it's a fine new entry into the Lisa Yee Lookalike Contest anyway. Good show!

And true Lisa Yee lookalikes should also have something on top of their heads that they're looking up at. Extra points if that something is a ball.

I so prefer these (even if they're imitators) to the ones that show headless bodies (generally girls).

How about Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah (published by Orchard Books--different imprint, but same house as Yee).

Graphic designers love the immediacy of photographs but they don’t want the images, especially the images of faces, to be so strong that they push you back from the book by not leaving you room to fill in some of the blanks yourself. Hence a world rife with dismemberment and half-heads on book jackets.
