Graphic novels in zee libraries
Currently I am attempting to introduce NYPL to the wide wonderful world of graphic novels for children. NYPL is notorious for avoiding anything that isn't "quality" literature. Fortunately there are young beautiful things like me to keep 'em up-to-date. That said, I don't want to add just any old thing. Until now, I've also been bogged down in some ways by my own limited knowledge. Thank God for School Library Journal. In their most recent issue (which I haven't seen yet because SOMEBODY in my office has been hogging it... hint... hint...) there's a wonderful cover story on adding and defending great graphic novels in your children's collection. Not only that but the author includes a list of possible additions. I would definitely do away with things like Jimmy Neutron (I do have some standards), but by and large this article may well save my hide.

The current issue of The Horn Book also has a few nice articles on graphic novels (so grab it before another librarian has a chance). A great book to recommend if you want people to appreciate the artform is Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. It's brilliant!

My husband owns and has foisted on me many times, "Understanding Comics". It really is the only must-have book on the topic, I agree. Currenly I'm looking at GNs for children. Not a whole lot to pick between, but thanks for the heads up about Horn Book. I'll try to find it in this clutter...
