Even in New York the libraries are in peril

Is peril too strong a word? In any case, here's the e-mail I received from NYPL All Powerful Leader Paul LeClerc this morning:

We have learned that the Executive Budget released this morning calls for a reduction of $19.8 million in City operating support for the Library in the fiscal year that begins July 1st.

The Library will continue discussions with the Mayor and the City Council to have these cuts restored. We will also continue to seek supplemental funds to open all our libraries six days and 42 hours a week.

I will keep you posted on all developments and know that together, we can fight these cuts and ensure the Library continues to be a vibrant part of the New York City community.

Blaugh! I'm essentially preaching to the choir here when I complain about library cuts. And it's not as if my job is in peril or any such nonsense. Just the same, this will probably mean shortened library hours. Poo.

... and rant is complete.

The library where I work had to cut back hours when a ballot measure didn't pass. Unfortunately, the people most affected were the children whose parents couldn't juggle their work schedules with our new hours.

Of course, we did get apologies from some patrons who voted against the measure because they thought we were bluffing about cutting hours.

Bittersweet justice then, eh?
What did they think you'd do instead? Just fire some people? Goodness me people are remarkable little beasts.
