Insert Favorite Penguin Joke Here

You know, Jen Robinson's recent post about how Central Florida's One Book One Community literacy campaign has selected the book Mr. Popper's Penguins for the 2007 community reading program got me to thinking. With penguins so hip in the media at the moment (whether it's March of the Penguins or the upcoming Happy Feet), why hasn't Richard Atwater's book gotten the Hollywood treatment by now? For that matter, why isn't it appearing on more reading lists. Everybody loves penguins, after all. So I propose that Hollywood get off its bum and circumnavigate the rights to Atwater's classic. Maybe it'd be awful, but it would get a lot more people reading the book, right? Hrm.

Sounds like a great idea to me! Thanks for the link, too.

It's been tried, Fuse. I can remember Mr. Popper's Penguins being an "open writing assignment" back in the days when such existed. I dunno what ever happened, but there are many books that have been optioned and re-optioned and had screenplays written and re-written that the costs involved in someone new trying to take over the project become almost insurmountable. Also, you'd often be surprised to find out who owns the rights to what. Again, there could be lots of reasons there's no movie, but it certainly isn't because no one's ever thought of it.

Okay, even better idea then. Mr. Popper's Penguins.... the tv show. Eh? Eh? No?

I wonder who DOES own the rights.

Favorite penguin joke? Okay...

How many penguins does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Three. One to sit on the bulb until it hatches, one to hunt for fish, and one to search for a power outlet.

Yeah, I don't get it either, but the boys laugh their feathers off when I tell that one.
