Oh, Sweet Mother of God

Via my PW Children's Bookshelf:
Back in May, Miramax optioned John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for the movies; Production Weekly now reports that Mark Herman, who wrote the screenplay, has been selected to direct the film. Striped Pajamas is about a boy in 1942 Berlin who must move with his family when his father becomes head of a concentration camp. Harry Potter producer David Heyman is producing; filming is scheduled to begin in Eastern Europe in April.
Wow.
Okay, kids, here's what we are all going to do. Let's go through the different Best Books of the Year lists and count how many times this book appeared on them (note: The Brits LOVE this book, yet if I'm not too mistaken only the Carnegie Medal acknowledged its existence). Then let's take in Cheryl Klein's fabulous assesment of the text. Finally, we will all sit back and imagine how this film would play out for audiences.

Wow.

Huh, "loathe with the white-hot heat of a thousand suns." Yeah, that's going to make a GREAT movie.

There is the slight slight possibility that this will be one of those cases where the film is better than the book. "The Bridges of Madison County" is often held up as such an example. Can't think of a kidlit equivalent, but there must be some out there.
